Kalamata olives are only found on a peninsula in southern Greece, called the Peloponnese. You have probably heard of it through blockbuster movies such as Sparta but food lovers are also often visiting the area to source, some of the best olives that can be found worldwide. and have played a part in the human diet for thousands of years. Growing under the amazing Greek sun, the olive trees here have much larger leaves than other types of olive trees around the nation and the world and absorb more sunshine.
Olives have been an integral part of Greek diets, for centuries and their appearance and size is somewhat different from olives anywhere else. Due to the climate in Greece, and immense heat for most seasons of the year their leaves tend to be much larger than other types of olive trees which also makes them distinctly tastier.
Black or deep purple Kalamata olives are grown in the valley of Messina, near the town of Kalamata.
