It is indeed one of our customers’ favourite products and one of those spirits you cannot forget if once tried on a holiday in Greece. Cyprus also has a similar drink named Zivania but Ouzo is unique to Greece and almost always on the dinner table, especially in the summer months.
Ouzo is a strong (38% or above) alcoholic distillate, with a soft and sweet taste. It was indeed once considered as a substitute for the absinthe and its gentle but savory flavor is due to the Greek sun and the Mediterranean climate. This climate is what allows it to mature the best spices and herbs growing in Greek soil such as anise, fennel, coriander, extra mastic from the mastic trees of Chios, and other 15 aromatic fruits and seeds. Knowing the proportions of the various seeds, carefully distilling, and choosing only the “heart” of the distillate creates a unique balance of flavour and aroma that is essential when coming to enjoying an “all Greek” evening. This refreshing aperitif is widely consumed in Greece and Cyprus. Its taste is similar to other anise liquors like pastis, sambuca, that are traditionally produced and consumed in Mediterranean countries.
The modern method of distillation of ouzo developed mainly in the 19th century but nonetheless, many distillers still use the traditional ways. Since then, Ouzo producers have also however developed distillation methods in copper distilleries with an aim to create a number of new variations, tastes, and unique strains.
It is also important to note, that in 1989, under the European Regulation 1576/89, Greece succeeded in gaining the right to designate ouzo as an exclusively Greek product with a protected designation of origin (PDO), a status recognized by the European Union.
We are pleased to be able to a great variety of Ouzo and Tsipouro on our website with renowned Greek providers such as Mavrakis 2 of their selections as well as their tasty Tsipouro.
Mavrakis Ouzo: Mavrakis specialises in the production of ouzo, the aniseed-based drink, fennel, which is widely distributed and consumed all over Greece. The Mavrakis company understands that a master blender must know how to select the specific extracts in order to produce something wonderful and vaguely mysterious. He must closely follow the maturing process and know when to change barrels in order to perfectly blend together the different extracts. Most important, he is the guardian of the houses most cherished traditions and formulas, handed down from generation to generation and without which there would be no consistency of taste or excellence maturing in their cellar.
